KNIGHTS TOURNAMENT
Gornja Stubica, June 18th 2005

In Gornja Stubica, around the museum of the Peasants' Revolt, for the fourth time was organized the knights' tournament. According to the opinion of the majority of visitors of such events, this is the best tournament in the continental parts of Croatia. It is, indeed, hard to resist the impressions gathered through a day spent in such an environment.

First of all, the place where this medieval fair is held is beautiful: this museum was a baroque castle of the Oršić family. In the atrium of the castle, there are still the remains of an ancient medieval castle which once existed there. The hills, a coniferous forest, a small vineyard beneath the museum, all these locations took part in the celebration of the return to the ages of cavalry. The view from the hills does not reveal the presence of the new age civilization thus helping us to forget this rigid world.
The ambient was reinforced by a large amount of visitors dressed as their medieval and renaissance ancestors.

On a little stage in the atrium of the castle, there were constantly children shows, ancient dances, renaissance music, knights' fights demonstrations.

In the valley beneath the castle, there was a medieval fair with demonstrations of traditional arts, such as leatherworking, calligraphy and smithy. There were demonstrations of archery and mace throwing for visitors; and for children, numerous games and trainings for future knights or jugglers.

During the day, a local group of knights Družba vitezova zlatnog kaleža, demonstrated a knights' performance with simulations of sward, axe and mace fights.

We were annoyed by the 'common' people who came nicely dressed for a Sunday walk. How dare they spoil the ambient prepared and kept by so many a people? The most beautiful time of the event began at sunset, the time of the opening of the portals between the human realm and the realm of our ancestors. The common visitors started to disperse; the hill-sides and woods remained empty. The nature stood silent and the spirit of immortality wound itself around our bodies. We felt a mysterious desire to remain chained to the past, a desire that continued intensively through the further experiences.

The dusk soon abandoned the stage leaving it ready for the clear night's scenario . The spirits returned to their realm, but the creatures of the night started their dance under the moonlight, deceived by the dream of the long lost times when people admired their existence.

In the atrium of the castle, the battles of the group Markus M, known by extremely realistic demonstrations of fights, has begun. There was a performance of musicians Codex, who perform traditional renaissance music from all over the Europe. The remaining visitors were then completely enchanted by the rhythms under the golden flames of torches.

The inevitable moment of return has forcefully arrived. The music stopped and the castle once again took form of the lonely guardian of memories. We left, sensing the melancholy of all those creatures of night that don't belong to this world. When they realized the deception, they have sadly withdrawn into their hideouts, conscious of the cruel impossibility to turn back the time. We were filled with the same sensation. It was hard to wake up in a giant cement building by the sounds of city traffic, after a wonderful day spent in the ancient past.
